Instructions to watch with the learner!

Just email me if they can't read the sentence and I'll craft one that is suitable after asking you a few questions.

Then ask them to do the same activity with their own name, and then mine!

If a child is not reading with ease and spelling with confidence, we first need to check whether three things are connecting efficiently: speech sounds, spelling, and meaning.

One quick check is the SSM Read and Map screener.

Video the learner - I need to see their hands when they are writing, and hear what they say. I don't need to see their faces. Send the clip to me at MissEmma@DyslexiaWhisperer.com (no s at the end of Whisperer)
It could be an unlisted youtube video, vimeo, drop box etc. Whatever you use.

Print off the sentence.

1/ They read it twice. It is vital that I can hear them clearly.
2/ They underline the graphemes and number them.
3/ They point to each speech sound line and say the sound. Say the word at the end of each.

Send me the clip!

It's important that they can read it, even if not with confidence.

Then send the clip of them doing the same with their name and also Miss Emma!

What am I looking for?
A proficient word mapper will identify not only the graphemes (shown below) but also plausible phonemes that correspond.
I am seeing if there are issues with foundational skills: phonemic awareness and orthographic knowledge. This is taught through phonics.
