To avoid the dyslexia paradox, we are offering free screening when children turn three, before anyone begins teaching them to read and spell. Our first office opens in Dorset, and we plan to open centres and connect with nurseries across the country. We cannot wait for teachers to receive training that centres neurodiversity, for politicians to bring about change that supports not only the support but the celebration of linguistic and neurodiversity, or for the DfE to reconsider policies around teaching phonics in KS1, which leave one in four children struggling to learn to read and spell in the first place.

Free early dyslexia screening for children aged 3 - 7 available in Dorset from September 2025. Email Miss Emma@DyslexiaWhisperer

For so long I’ve been supporting others to get children excited about reading… and now I get to be excited!

From September I’ll be in The Reading Hut with toddlers, screening children about to turn three for dyslexia risk and showing parents how to become attuned to their child’s play so they can make sure their child more easily connects spoken and written English. This way they can avoid reading and spelling difficulties before school even starts.

Get ready for lots of clips! And invites to join the movement to embrace and celebrate learning differences

Jamie Oliver is campaigning for:

“Early Screening: Early identification is crucial. Without it, many children struggle unnecessarily. Early screening means children get help before falling behind. Every child should have a universal dyslexia screening check within their first two years of school.”

I disagree. That’s far too late.

Let’s get moving towards that national roll out of free dyslexia screening for all children BEFORE they are taught to read.

Every Child Reading for Pleasure - Dyslexia Re-Routed - The Dyslexia Baby Project

Written English is difficult for at least 1 in 4 children to learn, and challenging for teachers to teach.
Mapped Words® and books make the Code visible and easier to understand, especially for children with SLCN and language processing difficulties.

At the click of a button, the grapho-phonemic structure of every word is shown. Phonemies® show the sound value, helping learners explore an opaque orthography and self-teach without guessing.

No child should be left behind because of the way they process language. Spelling enables self-teaching and supports easier reading.

Screening toddlers for speech, language and communication needs (SLCN) and dyslexia risk means targeted support can begin before school. By tuning in to children’s unique ways of communicating and learning through play, we can create inclusive environments that support self-teaching.

Too many fall through the cracks in a system not designed to embrace linguistic and neurodiversity. Teachers are left without the tools to reach every learner. We can change this.

🔷 Word Mapping Mastery® – A forthcoming book that explains why 1 in 4 children do not master single-word decoding and encoding, making fluency harder and putting many off reading for pleasure.

I loved living in Australia, where I met so many amazing teachers and school leaders. It was wonderful to be part of their learning journey. Schools embraced teaching reading and spelling differently through the Speech Sound Pics (SSP) Approach, which begins with Speech Sound Play (SSP).
